Paper Creation Extravaganza
Teacher:
Ms. Lauf Grade level: Grades 1 - 6 Objective: Explore the unusual and innovative ways we can design with a variety of paper. Guiding Question How can we express ourselves through organizing, planning, and creating with paper? Concepts Explored: Students will explore:
Students and teacher will collaborate to create assessment based on “I can…” statements. Planning, execution and craftsmanship will be assessed. Activities Examples of activities using paper: sculpture; mobile; texture exploration; portrait Canadian Soldiers in Wolrd War 2Teacher:
Mrs. Hammond Grade level: Grades 1 - 6 Objective(s): To learn more about World War 2 and the soldiers who fought in it Guiding Questions: How did the soldiers feel about going to battle in World War 2? What were the conditions of living and fighting? What are the ways we can remember these soldiers from World War 2? Why do we have War Memorials? What were Prisoners of War and how were they dealt with? Concepts explored: To gain an appreciation of the achievements and sacrifices of Canadians who served in the Second World War, to develop an understanding of the importance of remembering those who served Exploration: Students will learn through multi-media for example National Film board and Veterans Affairs posters and pictures and explore the life of a soldier who built, lived and fought in the trenches. They will look at a variety of War Memorials for example Dieppe in France and talk about why we have these memorials. We will have a guest speaker come and talk about a World War 2 Battle. The students will represent their learning through a poster, diorama or model and present to the group. Assessment: Thinking Critically about World War 2, Identifying and coming up with the importance of World War 2, Demonstrate their understanding of the soldier’s life and commitment to the soldiers’ achievements and sacrifices, the culminating activity will give the students the opportunity to be creative and demonstrate their understanding of what they have learned. Chess
Teacher:
Mrs. Renée Anderson Grade Level: Grades 1-6 Course Objective: Students will improve their concentration, critical thinking, abstract reasoning, problem solving skills by learning and engaging in the game of chess. Guiding Question: How are the skills we learn in chess related to other subject areas and life in general? Exploration: Learning to play chess has been proven to be a highly effective way to improve concentration, enrich performance in other subject areas, and promote critical thinking and creativity. Students will have the opportunity to learn and explore this game through active engagement. As students become confident in their understanding of the game and the role of each game piece they will begin to create, plan and design a chess set of their own. Assessment: Student assessment of strategy and critical thinking will be based on observation and discussion with students throughout the course. The culminating activity will give students the opportunity to demonstrate creativity as well as their understanding of the role of each game piece. Cooking

Junior PhotographerTeacher:
Mrs. Warrener Grade Level: 1-6 Come view the world through a different lens as we play and experiment with digital photography! Course Objective: Students will experiment with photography and photo editing as a way to creatively express themselves. Guiding Questions: How can we express ourselves through photography? Concepts Explored: Through a variety of lessons, students will explore elements of photography. Students will gain an appreciation for the history of photography. They will experiment with techniques that alter the appearances of their photos. Students will use iphoto editing tools to enhance their pictures. Assessment: How will we assess our photos? Assessment will be on-going as students will have the opportunity in each session to self-reflect and receive feedback from others on their digital photos. Students will create their own digital portfolio of pictures based on the lessons and techniques from each session. Additional Information: Students are welcome to bring in their own digital camera or device for these sessions. Ipods and Ipads are available at the school. Also, 2-3 volunteers will be required when going off-site (Fish Creek Ridge, neighborhood walks) to vary environments. “Creativity is intelligence having fun” ~Albert Einstein Computer ProgramingTeacher:
Mr. Veronese Grade level: Grades 1-6 Objective: Students will think critically to identify and solve complex problems. Guiding Questions: How is computer programming beneficial to our learning? Concepts explored: · This course is based on personalized, self-guided, and self-paced online tutorials through code.org. · Tutorials include using “drag and drop” coding practices to manipulate objects, while using mathematical reasoning. · Some explorations may be offline, which will allow students to practice coding techniques within a physical environment. Concepts Explored: · Collaboration and Problem Solving · Mathematical Processes: o Problem-solving o Technology o Visualization o Communication · Responsible and safe digital citizenship Assessment: Students’ progress will be tracked online while they progress through their tutorials. At the end of the program, students will be able to accurately and effectively manipulate objects to create games or stories. The Power
